As you may have noticed, unfortunately we’ve decided to stop filling growlers, squealers and riggers at both our venues for the time being. Whilst we’re working on getting that back up and running really soon we thought we’d provide you with the information as to why we made this choice.
In February of 2018 the National Measurement Institute (NMI) put out updated guidelines for the sale of beer in a growler or squealer. Currently beer of all sorts must be sold by reference to volume and that volume must be accurate. Our current growler filling procedure is focused on keeping our beer tasting great, not on measuring it down to the millilitre. This means there are a few changes we have put in place to ensure your growler has the volume in it the label says it does. We have a dedicated 4-tap growler filling machine nearly up and running at Brisbane Brewing Co that allows us to fill growlers and squealers accurately and keeps our beer tasting fresh in the fridge for up to 4 weeks!
Under the current legislation only those with an excise manufacturer’s license can repackage and resell beer from a higher duty paid keg. Luckily as producers of our own beer we have one of those. Our growlers, squealers and riggers will now be filled exclusively at Brisbane Brewing Co. Don’t stress if our Gabba pub is your local. We’ll have beers pre-filled and ready to go in the fridge. If you have a Brisbane Brewing Co and Brewhouse Brisbane growler simply bring it in and empty (and clean of course) and swap
it out for a full one. We’ll have growlers of our Walker Texas Ranger IPA, Brisbane Pale Ale and 2 rotating seasonal brews ready to go.
Businesses failing to comply with these conditions can face fines of up to $210,000! That’s crazy talk and as an independently owned business we certainly can’t afford those fines. We’d like to thank all of you for your patience and understanding while we get the growler fills back online. Keep an eye on our social media pages for word of when we’re back in action.
We would love to be able to offer all of our fantastic seasonal beers and guest taps for you to take home, but it’s currently not possible with the law the way it is. If you think these changes are as silly as we do make some noise about it and contact your local federal member. Drinking beer from growlers or squealers is a great way to support small local breweries and it’s also great for our planet!
